MONTICELLO, N.Y. -- The Town of Thompson Supervisor is asking the DEC to cover the pile of debris at the site of the old courthouse to protect the public from the possible asbestos.
The debris remains at the site after six contractors working to demolish the building were charged with illegal dumping.
In the letter, the Town Supervisor says the wind blows a cloud of dust from the debris across Pleasant Street, causing an unhealthy situation for the area. The town supervisor said the cover will prevent further contamination to the surrounding area until a decision is made on what to do with the debris.
An asbestos consultant from Hudson Valley Environmental says the amount of asbestos isn't dangerous, but is above the legal limit.
