NEWBURGH, N.Y. -- Students at Fostertown Elementary School turned their yearly field trip fundraiser into an event to raise money for organ donation.
The cause is especially close to this school, with one of their teachers needing a kidney transplant.
About 250 second graders participated in the walk-a-thon Friday afternoon. Teachers also participated in the fundraiser, donating $10 to the cause to dress down for the day.
An organizer says she hopes to raise more awareness of the need for organ donors.
"There is a teacher here who is waiting a life-saving organ transplant. It is a kidney and we are hoping we can do all our efforts to be able to support this cause, to make people aware of the need for it in Orange County especially," said Maddalena Casabianca-Reade.
So far, the walk-a-thon fundraiser has raised over $3,000 for organ donation.
