The Governor throws his endorsement behind several Democrats from across the Hudson Valley, including Orange County Executive Candidate Roxanne Donnnery. Our Eva McKend reports.
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. - Long time Orange County legislator Roxanne Donnery says an endorsement from Governor Cuomo sends an important message to her constituents,
just days from an election where voters will decide if she will be the one to lead the county as their new executive.
"I've watched him transform New York State and I've watched him deal with the dysfunction when he first came to office and that is exactly what I'm planning on doing for Orange County," said Donnery.
Donnery, a Democrat, has run as an advocate for the people, pledging to disrupt "the old boys network."
Her opponent, Republican Steve Neuhaus, supervisor for the Town of Chester, says he's not worried about the endorsement.
"I don't think it has any impact. If the Governor was really sincere about doing something for Roxanne Donnery, he'd be in Orange County," said Neuhaus.
"My opponent only wishes that he could have what I have today whether it be in Orange County or Westchester County. He's only wished that he's even had the issues to run on. He hasn't had those either," said Donnery.
The event was all about unity. The thought being that if the Democrats from across the Hudson Valley work together, they can bring out the vote come election day.
"We're going to be doing really great when we have all the counties in this state echoing the same message and all pulling together, pulling that progressive train," said Cuomo.
Several elected officials from across Orange County were on hand to show their support for Donnery.
"She realizes there's a partnership between the county and the cities that needs to be developed even more. Ed Diana was good for the cities but I think Roxanne Donnery can do even better," said Joseph DeStefano, a fellow Democrat and the Mayor of Middletown.
The next executive will make key decisions like determining the fate of the now closed Orange County Government Center and will decide whether to keep Valley Valley Nursing Home county run or turn it over to private ownership.
