ULSTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- Prospective tenants are being warned of a recent online rental scam.
According to the Ulster County District Attorney’s Division of Consumer Affairs, the scams are becoming popular on Craigslist. They say the scammer lists a legitimate property which he or she does not own and then tries to get you to pay for it without you seeing it first. The scammer also promises to send you keys or have you pick them up from an agent after he or she receives your payment.
If you believe you may have been targeted, you're reminded to verify the owner of the property by contacting the County Clerk's office, do not wire money for any reason and walk away from the deal if you cannot see the property before signing a lease.
