NEW YORK STATE, N.Y. -- Drivers will now have more cell service available along the Northway.
Verizon Wireless says cell phone towers have filled most of an 80 mile coverage gap in the area. And now it plans to fill the remaining 15 mile space with three more towers next year. The wireless carrier says it has built and activated 11 new sites on I87 since 2008.
The Adirondack Park Agency has approved 81 tower projects over the last four years.
The need for more coverage was illustrated in a 2007 incident in which a man slid off the road and died trying to escape his stuck car, unable to call for help.
