Democrats call for special election for senate

By: Web Staff

NEW YORK STATE – On Tuesday, we told you how state assembly republicans are pushing for a special election for the U.S. senate when Hillary Clinton is confirmed as Secretary of State. Now it looks like some democrats are on board with the idea.

Assemblyman Rory Lancman of Queens introduced a bill that would take the power to appoint a senator away from Democratic Governor David Paterson and would require a special election for the soon-to-be vacant senate seat. Republican Assembly leader James Tedisco is also pushing a measure to require special elections to fill Senate vacancies, but the committee process is expected to continue well after Paterson makes his choice. The bill is also being co-sponsored by Senator Joe Addabbo.

Paterson is conducting a confidential search for an appointee from among more than 10 hopefuls.
