Governor expects special election on March 31
GLENS FALLS, N.Y. -- “This is going to be the people of the 20th Congressional District's congressional district,” said Jim Tedisco.
On January 27th, Republicans back Jim Tedisco for Congress.
“It very important for me to get out and meet the voters,” said 20th congressional district candidate Scott Murphy.
And on February 1st, 20th district Democrats made businessman Scott Murphy their choice.
But one date was missing. There had been no call for the special election replacing Kirsten Gillibrand from Governor Paterson, until Wednesday.
“The date we have in agreement among all of the parties that are participating in the election is March 31st,” said Governor Paterson.

“It's not to my advantage. It's to the advantage of the people in the district to have someone as their congress person. It's just a shame that there was any delay,” Tedisco said.
“I think we are both in the same situation. I am excited to know the date now to get busy with planning and get around to the district to meet people,” Murphy said.
With the date set, the campaign will last about a month. And you will see a lot of Tedisco and Murphy. Insiders say both candidates will spend millions getting voters their message.
Election commissioners have already started planning for the day, even though some say they don't have budgets and will need to find workers. Many poll watchers are seniors who have headed south for the winter. But for the two candidates, one thing is not up for debate.
“There has to be a debate,” Tedisco said.
“If he'll show up, we will debate,” Murphy said.
Murphy says he hopes Democrats recognize this is an important race. The GOP seem to think it is, with Tedisco getting a visit and support from National Republican Committee Chairman Michael Steele last week.
