Assembly votes to legalize MMA
NEW YORK STATE -- An Assembly committee has voted to legalize Mixed Martial Arts in New York State. The fighting style commonly seen in Ultimate Fighting Championships continues to spark controversy.
Supporters say it will bring additional revenue for the state and spur safety regulations for the industry. Opponents argue legalizing mixed martial arts will spread violence in the state and won't generate as much money as anticipated since fans can watch the sport elsewhere, including on pay-per-view.
As for opponents’ main argument, they say it's a vicious sport.
"So we have these kids in the inner city, turning to violence, we have give them something other than ultimate fighting as an alternative," said Assemblyman Bob Reilly.

"I don't know that prohibiting this sport from taking place is gonna solve our violence problem in New York State or in America," said Assemblyman Sam Hoyt.
Right now, Mixed Martial Arts is legal in 38 other states.
The full assembly is expected to vote on legalizing the sport sometime this session.
