NEW YORK STATE -- New York Governor David Paterson continues to battle reports that his party would like to dump him from the 2010 ticket in favor of Attorney General Andrew Cuomo.
One report now claims there is discussion in New York City about asking long-time congressman Charles Rangel, who's embroiled in a series of ethics issues, to step aside next year and allow Paterson an escape route from Albany by running for Congress. The state's other top democrat isn't ready to speculate.
"Right now he's the Governor. There are no vacancies. I don't anticipate there'd be any vacancies, but I think the Governor would make a good congressman. A good Senator. And a great Governor," said Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver.
Silver had praise for Paterson's latest moves on the state budget and his calls for deep spending cuts, saying it is a display of "true leadership."
