ALBANY, N.Y. -- "Thanksgiving day has been a special day in my life, and I expect that it will be this time."

Almost 15 years to the day he became Senate majority leader of New York State in a Thanksgiving week coup, Joe Bruno waited for hours Tuesday as jurors deliberated as the whether he deprived New Yorkers of honest services by getting paid by companies doing business with New York and not disclosing it.

"As I've said for several weeks, we have done nothing wrong," said Bruno. "I think the evidence has proven that we have done nothing wrong.

Bruno arrived at the federal courthouse six hours into juror deliberations as they asked for clarification on count three out of the eight. "Are we supposed to limit discussion to just Vytek or are we able to consider all of the Fassler companies...as a foundation on intent or scheme by the defendant?"

Vytek, one of Leonard Fassler's businesses, paid Bruno for his consultant advice, which prosecutors allege was really a gift meant to secure his Senate influence. Jurors heard from the judge that they have to consider all evidence as a whole."

Of course, it's impossible to read the tea leaves and what that might mean for any verdict, and likely impossible to say what it means that it looked like three jurors seemed to smile toward Bruno and the defense team.

"I thought they were smiling generally," said Bruno.

Either way, deliberations will continue Monday as Bruno stays close by, taking care of business, with his life in the hands of seven women and five men.
