NEW YORK STATE -- Governor Cuomo has signed a bill extending the deadline for holding a special election and set a date for New York's next one.

The new law means special elections will be held 70 to 80 days after they are announced instead of 30 to 40. Cuomo says the extended timetable will give county boards of elections more time to mail military ballots overseas.

The governor also set a date for the special election for the 26th Congressional District. The seat has been vacant since Representative Chris Lee resigned last month. Voters will pick a new representative on May 24th.
