NEW YORK -- Seven weeks before the general election, Republican Nan Hayworth holds a 13-point lead over Democratic challenger Sean Patrick Maloney in the 18th congressional district. That's according to the latest Siena poll.

Seeking her first re-election, Hayworth leads in every region of the district. She also holds a nearly 2-1 advantage with independents.

The poll indicates there is no gender gap among voters. An almost equal amount of men and women support Hayworth.

Meanwhile, Maloney's campaign says the race is closer than the poll indicates, and now that Working Families candidate Larry Weissman is off the ballot, Maloney will gain the majority of his votes.

Siena pollster Steve Greenberg said it will likely tighten the race a little, but Hayworth is more well known.

"Right now, 48 percent of voters view Hayworth favorably, compared to 37 percent who view her unfavorably. For Maloney, more than half of the voters, 54 percent, say they don't know enough to have an opinion about him," Greenberg said.

The newly drawn 18th congressional district covers all of Orange and Putnam counties, as well parts of Dutchess County.

YNN will bring you a debate from the 18th congressional district race on Monday, Oct. 15 at 7 p.m., live from Marist College.
