There are three people who are vying to be the next Orange County Executive. Jessica Chen spoke with all three.
ORANGE COUNTY, N.Y. -- Democratic candidate Roxanne Donnery says truth, honesty and integrity is what will make her a great Orange County Executive.
“I believe what I'm doing, I believe in the future,” said Steve Neuhaus, the Republican candidate for Orange County Executive.
For the first time in 12 years, a new person will take over the position of Orange County Executive.
Neuhaus is the Chester Town Supervisor. He said one of his goals is to improve the economy.
“My big thing is if we're going to give tax breaks to new companies coming in here, they better be New York license plates with local people working there,” said Neuhaus.
Donnery is an Orange County legislator. She plans to fight for what’s fair.
She said, "I do not believe any community should be able to go forth."
Donnery is referring to the Village of Kiryas Joel building a pipeline to the Catskill Aqueduct.
"I believe they've broken laws when they've not had to follow a law,” added Donnery.
Neuhaus said it is all about thinking ahead. In reference to the Orange County Government Center, he added he is willing to pay more now in order to save costs later.
“You don't want to save money today and spend and waste more over the long term,” said Neuhaus.
Both candidates agree the Valley View Center should not be shut down. However, Donnery said she wants to keep under the control of Orange County.
“That we should do whatever we had to do to have that happen,” she said.
Neuhaus agrees with Donnery on a short term plan, but he said the future of Valley View needs to be reconsidered.
He said, "I think they should fund it because right now even if they wanted to privatize, four months is too soon to be able to do it."
Political newcomer Niki Lee Rowe is also running for the position.
"I’m not a politician, but I understand politics,” said Rowe.
She said her background makes her qualified to run on the Working Families Party line.
"I understand that we can actually come together and I believe my background as a mediator and arbitrator gives me the opportunity to create a team and a collaborative effort to make accomplishment happen,” noted Rowe.
