It's a company and arts organization that has been seeing tough times for years, but on their 35th anniversary, they're still taking the stage. Our Vince Gallagher has more.

Are you ready for some Shakespeare? It's coming. Shakespeare & Company has officially announced their 35th summer performance season.

"And we hope to create some excitement here on this campus here with new work, new plays and of course, doing Shakespeare, which is the bedrock of what we do," said Tony Simotes, Shakespeare & Company President.

This years' theme, rebellion and revolution, which has really always been the case since the company's beginning back in 1978.

"It was about shifting the way theater was viewed. It was about how can artists become involved, the actors and designers in a different way, so it was that sense of really owning our past," Simotes said.

The crew here at Shakespeare & Company are happy about their 35th season in more ways than one. Not only is there a whole new roster schedule this yea, last year was the first time the company operated in the black, so they're just happy there's not a curtain call coming up

"We're feeling really good about where we're going, but in terms of where grants might be, where foundations might be, that timeline is a little behind us yet and it hasn't caught up with our good feelings of where we are,” Simotes said.

One of the major events not just here but perhaps of the entire upcoming Berkshire season, the appearance of Oscar winner Olympia Dukakis is this year's version of "The Tempest."

"And she said ‘Tony, why aren't you going to direct me in a play?’ So we were finally able to work out a schedule to have her here,” Simotes said.

Other productions this year include "The Tragedy of King Lear," "Parasite Drag" and “Cassandra Speaks." Many members of the company here have performed all around, but many also enjoy coming back.

"I find this place to be one of the areas where I do some of my most, I feel my most creative work can actually begin to happen," said John Douglas Thompson.

And if you're interested in a little Shakespeare, as well as some other stage entertainment, Shakespeare & Company's 35th season opens May 25th and runs through September 2nd.
