The Spa Spot: Day 23 wrap
By Wilmer Garcia's standards this summer, Mr. Algebra's win in the 10th race Wednesday was something of a disappointment. It paid a mere $22.40.
Mr. Algebra was the apprentice jockey's eighth victory of the Saratoga season and his lowest payoff. Topping the list is Warrior Up, who paid $60.50 on August 9. His other winners in descending order of returns: Majestic Raffy, July 29, $50; Alykela, August 12, $48.60; Purely Majestic, August 5, $36.80; The Party's Here, July 26, $36; Count Catamount, August 1, $27.60; Fly Bye Pomeroy, July 30, $27.
- Someone at the track was screaming for Garcia's long shot in the 10th because it made him the lone winner of the Pick Six. The return on investment was $49,308
- Even though there was only one Pick Six winner, favorites ruled, winning six of the 10 races on the program. That pushed the percentage for the season to 35.7
- Trainer Gary Contessa won a pair and has seven for the meet.
- Compared to the same day last year, the on-track attendance of 15,705 was down 18 percent. The on-track handle was off four percent to $2,387,818 and the total handle was up 16 percent to $11,152,087
