WATERFORD, N.Y. – A huge fire in Waterford leaves dozens without a home. A large apartment building in the heart of the village went up in flames on Monday.

The fire broke out around 6 p.m. at 100 Broad Street and spread quickly. More than 30 people are homeless.

The focus now is on trying to save the neighboring building.

There are reports this may have been started by a grill on a front porch, but the fire chief said he can't confirm that right now.

Waterford Fire Chief John Fairclough said, "Well, right now we have heavy equipment in to remove debris from 100 Broad Street to allow us to get down to the bottom of the pile where we think we have some hot spots. We're also waiting for the town engineer to come in to evaluate the 104 structure to determine if residents are able to go back in there to salvage anything or if the building has to come down."

A few firefighters suffered minor injuries, but we're told no residents were hurt. The Red Cross has set up a temporary shelter at the Third Street Civic Center in Waterford.
