RV parks seeing more business this summer
LAKE GEORGE, N.Y. -- Bert and Robyn Haber of Florida are spending their summer months in Lake George. They've settled into their spot at the Lake George RV Park and say the cost of gas wouldn't keep them from being here.

Bert Haber said, "We do without other things to make sure we can come up here."

They say it's possible to do a lot, without even getting in the car. That's good news for anyone trying to save a few dollars on vacation this summer.

"This campground has everything you need. Movies, swimming pool and restaurants," said Haber.

His wife Robyn added, "We walk a lot. There are a lot of trails. We walk to Lake George. We have tennis courts. The workout room. The movies. Bert loves to do the wash, so that's great."

The RV Park manager says because of the convenience of being able to park and stay for a week or two at a time, they already have several sold-out days, but they are seeing fewer vacationers coming from further away.

Manager Gary Thornquist said, "When gas prices go up, we have more people that come from a closer distance. We have a lot of people from the Capital Region and the Hudson Valley."

And Thornquist says it would take a lot more for people to cancel their vacations entirely.

"To have someone give up a vacation because of gas prices is kind of like the last straw. They do need their vacations," Thornquist said.

While business is looking good, there is one thing that is putting a little bit of a damper on the summer season. Schools let out later this year than in previous years. Here in the area, schools let out on Wednesday.

Thornquist said, "That is impacting the season for all the businesses here. Instead of a ten week season, we go to a nine week season and that's going to cause us to compress our business a little bit."

Despite that, they still have people like the Habers, who say this is the time they look forward to all year long, no matter what it costs them to get here.
