MALTA, N.Y. -- Advanced Micro Devices is coming to the Capital Region. AMD has announced the creation of a leading-edge semiconductor manufacturing facility to be built in the Luther Forest Technology Park in Malta.

It might be time for the Luther Forest Technology Campus to change its sign, now that its no longer just the proposed site for AMD, or what's now The Foundry Company.

"Gee, what took you so long," joked Malta Town Supervisory Paul Sausville.

Four years after AMD first chose Malta as its future building site, the commitment is finally set in stone. It's a day many people in the area didn't think would come.

Sausville said, "Well, I think there were a lot of Doubting Thomases. I think there's just been kind of a good natured skepticism on the part of the residents, but I think they're going to be excited."

Though the official groundbreaking for the site is still a couple months off, the town has been building for the past year -- five roundabouts off Exit 12, almost six miles of road on site and completely revamping Dunning Street to make the site more attractive for the company.

Sausville said, "The ideal world is to be able to have your kids nearby, to have your grandkids nearby, and not have to travel to California to visit them."

Luther Forest Tech Park Executive Director Mike Relyea said, "As all of this kind of gets untangled and we see where those opportunities are, I think it just is a better deal than we actually even originally thought."

The Foundry Company is looking to bring in at least 1,400 jobs to the area, and officials said they do plan on hiring locally.
