Schenectady school district employee arrested for 2001 arson
SCHENECTADY COUNTY, N.Y. -- It was August, 2001. The sound this homeowner heard was an explosive, set off while he, his wife and two small children slept just feet away, and whoever did it, left a note.
“It just said something about you're real tough when it comes to dealing with women, let's see how tough you are with men,” said the homeowner.
The owner of the home, who doesn't wish to be identified, says police told him the suspect lit a cigarette, that was later recovered by police, then attached it to the end of the explosive, which detonated with such force that it warped the entire door and blew the handle right off into the yard.
“The neighborhood was pretty unnerved for the next year trying to figure out what happened,” said the homeowner.
Police say the suspect mistakenly attacked the wrong house, but they aren't saying who the intended target was.
On Friday, nearly eight years later, police arrested Steven Raucci at his office at Mont Pleasant Middle School. There, police found an unlit bomb.

“There is no indication in this investigation that he targeted children, but I am concerned at the amount of latitude he was given to conduct his business in the school. We believe that Mr. Raucci engaged in an ongoing course of conduct that involved intimidating people that he or his friends had problems with,” said Schenectady County DA, Bob Carney.
That includes, police say, in his role with the district and as a union official for CSEA. The district was not told Rossi was being investigated until his arrest.
“We can't go and point out somebody in the community and say I think that's a bad person. I can only comment on people who have been arrested and charged with crimes,” said Carney.
Police seized one district owned computer from Raucci's office. From his home they took two others, along with $120,000 in cash and three hand guns he had a permit for.
He is currently being held in Schenectady County Jail without bail, and there's at least one local homeowner who will be watching this case very closely.
The Schenectady City School District Board of Education released a statement saying:
“The board is concerned and troubled about the allegations against Steve Raucci. They say they have accepted and support the recommendation of the Superintendent, Mr. Ely, that he hold a news conference tomorrow to share with the public what facts he can properly publicly share concerning this matter and address legitimate concerns that have been raised.”
“The board says it has directed the Superintendent to be prepared to brief the Board in executive session at the scheduled meeting on Wednesday to address concerns and make recommendations for how to handle the matter."
