School board approves Raucci's retirement request
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- Schenectady City School Board members unanimously voted Wednesday to grant retirement to the facilities director facing arson and terrorism charges.

The school district attorney told board members it doesn't matter if Steven Raucci retires or is fired because he still gets his state pension either way. Following that explanation, the board voted unanimously to allow Raucci to retire.

The board must now figure out how much the district is obligated to pay him.

Schenectady School Board President Jeff Janiszweski said, "What we have tonight is a tentative legal opinion. It is not conclusive, so it is possible that when you look into all the case law all of the contract law that, oops, there is something we have to do, but our opinion tonight is that we are done."

Raucci's retirement will take effect on April 15th. He is currently suspended without pay. Raucci is currently being held at the Schenectady County Jail without bail as he awaits trial.

Raucci is accused of intimidating his enemies within the district by using explosives. During the investigation, police discovered an explosive device in his office at Mont Pleasant Middle School.
