Soaring health care costs
PITTSFIELD, Mass - It's an unhealthy problem with health care coverage you could say is at code blue: soaring costs for a system that's outdated and in need or repair.
"I think a lot needs to change," said Health New England President & CEO Peter Straley.
Straley is part of the Coalition for Affordable Health Care - a group that's in Pittsfield Friday to talk to the public and business owners about their coverage. Straley says the best way to get coverage costs under control is to take better care of ourselves.

"We all know there are things we can do better. I have things I'm working on, you have things you're working on. These will contribute to our health because after all, our health is the most important contributor to our well-being," said Straley.
It's a well-being that includes more conservative care. Too often, Straley says, doctors order more tests than are needed.
"MRIs, CTs...these are exceptionally expensive, exceptionally important diagnostic tools, but we use them too much," said Straley.
One local insurance expert says another way to rein in health care costs is to shop around.
"As frustrated as employers are, they are having more options and they are taking advantage of the marketplace forces," said True North Financial Services insurance broker Holly Taylor.
It's a marketplace that includes more carrier options than in years past, especially here in Berkshire County.
"For example, we now have options to choose from. We've always had Blue Cross Tufts, and Health New England. But Falcon Healthcare is new to the market," said Taylor.
