Car flips guardrail; lands in Mettawee River

GRANVILLE, N.Y. -- Five people are recovering today after their vehicle flipped over a guard rail and landed in the Mettawee River Saturday night.

The Washington Sheriff's department says the car was traveling north on Route 22 in Granville, when it went off the right shoulder, toppled over the guard rail and landed in the river belly up. A town resident happened to be driving past the scene minutes after the accident happened.

"There was a girl in the river and one kid underneath the car with his leg pinned and there was another kid holding his head up out of the water,” said Chris Morris, Granville resident.


Sheriff's deputies say four of the passengers we able to get out of the car on their own and the fifth was helped out by the Granville Fire Department.

All five passengers were taken to Glens Falls hospital. Their ages range from 14 to 20. They complained of back and leg injuries.

The accident is still under investigation.
