Commuters ride the waves to work

Commuters ride the waves to work
CAPITAL REGION -- "It's a beautiful, sunny day," said Susan Taylor of Troy. "It's not freezing cold, and I get to watch all the crazy commuters on 787 in their cars when I'm sitting on a boat deck, having a cup of coffee, enjoying other people's company."

There was hardly any traffic on the water for the 30 or so people who cruised into Albany on the Dutch Apple.

Taylor said, "I commute to Albany for work three days a week - Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday."

While this cruise was only a one-day deal, passengers on the boat would love to see the idea take off.

Ian White of Albany said, "It takes a little bit longer riding the boat than if I were to just ride in or especially than driving in, but I think it's worth it, especially on a day like this. It's really relaxing. It's a nice start to the day."

Troy Mayor Harry Tutunjian said, "There's nothing better than taking a cruise to work everyday and not worrying about parking and things like that so I think it's a good idea."

Plus, it works well with the mayor's plan to develop downtown Troy. He's been in talks with Dinosaur BBQ to open up at the old Fresno's location since last summer, which would share a deck with the cruiseline.

Mayor Tutunjian said, "It's a great location for that, and being on the water just makes it that much more exciting for all the boat traffic we have in the summer months."

If Dinosaur does come, the mayor has said he'll throw a barbecruise for the barbecue to hopefully attract a few more customers to the newest restaurant on the river.

"I think that would be great," said Taylor. "That would be such a destination."

Both beautiful places to arrive, but the best part is the view in between.
