ALBANY, N.Y. -- About a dozen people with candles lit met with Albany County Legislator Chris Higgins in Albany Monday night. The message to him was clear; keep the Albany County nursing home open.

They marched down Hudson Street. They called it a prayer vigil. Judy Maloney was there, and she prays the facility her brother calls home will stay open.

β€œHe's not the only one, there are over 200 residents; they need 24 hour care,” said Judy Maloney.

While the praying was part of the event, the group spent time pleading with Higgins to support building a new Albany County nursing home.

County Executive Michael Breslin's long term healthcare plan closes the nursing home. Breslin says it will save nearly $20 million.

Legislature Majority Leader Frank Comiso supports keeping the home open and building a new one. Higgins says neither side has shown him enough details to make a decision one way or another.

β€œI think it is my duty to get all the facts before I make a decision here, because quite frankly this is going to have a major impact on the people of Albany County,” said Higgins.

County Executive Michael Breslin's plan to close the nursing home faces steep opposition. It is not know if he will have the support he needs to get his plan passed.
