COLONIE, N.Y. -- Young horse owners are credited with saving animals trapped in a barn fire. Firefighters say the barn fire happened at New Horizon Stables on Pearse Road in Colonie just before 5 p.m. Wednesday night.

The cold weather made it extremely hard for firefighters to fight the flames.

The fire destroyed two barns, but no one was hurt and the horses were saved.

"In the process of everything that was going on, we had the civilian kids that were here taking care of the horses, save all the horses while the fire department tried to extinguish the fire," said Stanford Heights Fire Chief Dale Monlea.

"I was just terrified because I didn't know if my horse was ok. I know everyone else was terrified too, because they had all their tack and saddles, which costs so much money, in that barn that was burning down," said horse owner Bryce Grates.

The Stanford Heights Fire Chief says a preliminary investigation shows a portable heat source too close to combustibles may have sparked the fire.
