Senator Schumer talks security during visit to Schenectady

By: Curtis Schick

New York Senator Chuck Schumer has now visited each of the state's 62 counties in 2009. But as our Curtis Schick tells us, his visit to Schenectady on Tuesday took on a different subject in light of the attempted terrorist attack on Christmas day.

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- Proctor's CEO Phillip Morris gives Senator Schumer a tour of the theater's Co-Generation Power plant. The theater wants some help from the senator so it can expand the system so more downtown buildings can use it.

But this standard political event took a back seat to ongoing fallout from the attempted terror attack in Detroit on Christmas day.

"If one person could bring down a plane, and it came so close we should be doing a lot more to make sure it doesn't happen again," said Schumer.

Nationally, security has been beefed up at airports. The Department of Homeland Security says more air marshals have been put on U.S. flights. And President Obama says he is ordering a review of watch lists and screening systems.

But the question remains, how come no one stopped Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab from getting on a plane even though his family had warned U.S. security officials about his extreme beliefs, he checked no luggage and was flying on a one way ticket?

"Whether you're in the battlefield in Iraq or Afghanistan or a screener at the airport, you need actionable information. And I'm not sure all this information was in the hands of TSA at the time," said Tom Ridge, former Homeland Security director.

Some have placed the blame on Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano. But Schumer says she should keep her job.

"She said she is going to do a thorough check," said Schumer. "She has had a good reputation as governor of Arizona. I will be watchfully waiting to see what she has done."

The flight the suspect was on originated in Nigeria. Schumer said foreign countries must do a better job checking passengers. Or, he says the United States should make it difficult for people on these flights to come here.
