Deputy will serve jail time and resign position after guilty plea
SARATOGA COUNTY -- A Saratoga County sheriff's deputy accused of sexually abusing several women while he was on duty has pleaded guilty.
Saratoga County District Attorney Jim Murphy said Deputy Donald Harder III, 29, pleaded guilty Thursday to first-degree menacing, a felony, and four misdemeanor counts of third-degree sexual abuse, one for each of the four victims.
The menacing charge stems from an incident in Edinburgh where the DA said Harder placed the victim in fear of physical injury if she didn't comply with his sexual demands, all while he was wearing his uniform and his service weapon and was standing next to his patrol vehicle.
Harder is expected to be sentenced to six months in jail followed by five years of probationary supervision. He must also resign from the sheriff's department and will be required to submit his DNA to the database maintained by the Division of Criminal Justice Services.
Sentencing is scheduled for May 13.
Harder had been on the force for three years and was immediately suspended after his arrest in August 2009.
