SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- Special deliveries at Bellevue Hospital are routine, but nothing is routine about the survival of a baby born without a heartbeat and not breathing.
That's what happened when Andrew Borgman was brought into the world a year ago with the odds of living stacked against him. Andrew beat those odds and celebrated his first birthday in style with his mom, dad and the medical team that saved his life.
Doctors say Andrew suffered from a rare childbirth complication that's difficult to detect before delivery and often has a high death rate.
"He had a really hard birth, we didn't know what to expect, we didn't know what was going on or anything. Everyone here in the hospital, from the person making sure I was comfortable to the doctors to the neounit to the nursery were just amazing," said Andrew's father, Joe Borgman.
"He had a 95 percent chance of not surviving and he did and that's thanks to everyone here," said Christine Borgman, Andrew's mother.
Happy Birthday to Andrew from all of us at YNN.
