SALEM, N.Y.-- It's a relatively new business in Salem. The Battenkill Valley Creamery has been operating since 2008. For owner and third generation farmer, Seth McEachron, winning the most coveted title in the industry was highly anticipated.
"It's been a goal of ours ever since we stared and before we started," McEachron said.
Battenkill Valley Creamery was given the title on best milk in the state last week at the State Fair in Syracuse. The business was named the highest quality milk by the Cornell University's Department of Food Science.
"This was voted the best milk in the state? I believe it," said one customer.
Owners here at the Battenkill say what really makes a difference in how their milk tastes is how they treat their cattle.
"We just do everything possible to keep them comfortable in the summertime," said McEachron. "They have fans and sprinklers to keep them cool. They have nice beds that they lay on, mattress beds where they are kept dry and clean."
The creamery is also popular for something else.
"Love the ice cream. You can't beat this ice cream," said one customer.
The business has an ice cream parlor right up front , where its quality milk is used. The parlor has become an automatic pit stop for travelers, like this New York City resident.
"We came up to get out in the country for our Labor Day weekend, but every time we come up here we make a special side trip to this little dairy over here where they have great ice cream."
The type of attention McEachron describes as the extra icing on the cake.
