ALBANY, N.Y. -- A new poll shows trouble for Democrats looking to keep control of the state Senate. According to a poll by the Siena Research Institute, four key races will help decide control of the Senate in 2011.

The Siena poll shows that in the 11th and 44th districts, the Republican incumbent Senators both have big leads over their Democratic challengers. In the 44th race, Senator Hugh Farley is leading Sue Savage by a 55 to 37 percent margin. In the 11th, Frank Padavan has a 56 to 32 percent edge over challenger Tony Avella.

Over in the 3rd and 48th districts, Democratic incumbents are in tight races with Republican challengers. In the 48th district, Democrat Darrel Aubertine is trailing challenger Patricia Ritchie by three points. In the 3rd district, incumbent Brian Foley leads Lee Zeldin by just one point.

Governor David Paterson weighed in on those races and the anti-incumbent sentiment many recent polls have shown.

Paterson believes voter frustration has a lot do with the still-ailing economy. He said he believes New Yorkers will vote with their wallets in mind.

"I think also there's the issue of the property tax caps, which 80 percent of New Yorkers want and which both of the senators you mentioned, Foley and Aubertine, want as well, which has been passed in the Senate but has been stymied, and we are trying to get a vote on that or at least an assurance that there will be a vote on that in the next administration, and we think that is probably one of the more important issues for voters right now."

The Democrats currently hold a slim 32-30 majority in the state Senate.
