LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. -- A surprising turn of events in the race for the 20th Congressional District with a week to go until Election Day.
A Siena Research Institute poll released Tuesday shows Republican Chris Gibson taking a 9-point lead over incumbent Scott Murphy, erasing a 17-point deficit from just a few weeks ago.
The poll shows if the election were held tomorrow, 51 percent of those surveyed would vote for Gibson compared to Murphy's 42 percent. Six percent were undecided.
SRI spokesman Steven Greenberg said while more voters know who Murphy is, his favorability rating has decreased significantly in recent weeks. Meanwhile, Gibson is becoming more well-known and has been able to gather more Independents on his side.
The Siena poll has a margin of error of 3.8 percent.
