NEW YORK STATE -- A retired Army Colonel now takes command of the 20th Congressional district. Political newcomer Republican Chris Gibson beat incumbent democrat Scott Murphy as part of a wave of Republican victories in the House of Representatives.
Scott Murphy served in Washington for just a year in a half, replacing Kirsten Gillibrand in a special election when she was appointed to the U.S. Senate.
Prior to Gillibrand and Murphy, the district was long controlled by the GOP.
During the campaign, Chris Gibson railed against Murphy's support of health care reform and handling of the budget.
Gibson talked about the responsibility for the new congress.
"This environment right now is hostile and uncertain to growth and it needs to change. It's got to change. We have to listen to our small businesses owners and their employees. They tell us what we need to be doing. We need to target the taxes, the regulation and the health care cost. That's what's going facilitate the growth, the expansion of this small business owners," Gibson said.
Gibson says the federal budget must be balanced by reducing spending.
