ALBANY, N.Y. --Crosswalks in Albany are cleared Saturday afternoon thanks to Albany Common council members and some U-Albany volunteers.
In Pine Hills, many sidewalks and especially crosswalks remain unshoveled and icy. This creates a problem for residents with strollers, walkers, and those who are blind.
Council members Anton Konev and Leah Golby took matters into their hands as they shoveled snow and chipped away at the ice.
Konev wants to remind people it's their duty to keep the crosswalks cleared.
"People need to know that crosswalks are actually a responsibility of the owner of a property right next to the crosswalk. crosswalks are not city of albany responsibility. But we are here just to help out and at least solve the problem for some of our neighbors," he said.
Konev and Golby are also pushing for bigger penalties for those who don't remove snow from the sidewalk in front of their houses.
