ALBANY, N.Y. -- "It was quite embarrassing what happened downtown, but it was not a fair representation of the student population," said UAlbany student Julie Gondar. "We have students here who care about the system and really value why we're going to school."

Dozens of students demand legislators to reconsider millions worth of cuts to high education funding. It's constructive rallying, said participants, to erase the stain left by their fellow St. Patrick's Day revelers.

"We are asking for the proper funding for SUNY and I feel that we deserve it," said UAlbany student Sarah Barry. "Even though students from UAlbany were involved in the riots of Saturday it was a very small number. It was about 500 as opposed to the 1,300 students that we have."

While the riots landed dozens in court and at least six in handcuffs, Tuesday's ralliers earned the respect of SUNY administrators.

"Well I think this is really what our students are about," said SUNY chancellor Nancy Zimpher. "I think the University at Albany has been quite clear about the responsible behavior of students and I know our students know that. This is very courageous and very responsible and we really appreciate what our students are saying to public officials about SUNY."

SUNY Chancellor Nancy Zimpher came to support the students on the Capitol lawn. She says she has every confidence the students who value their education will help restore any tarnished credibility.

"I absolutely understand that a few people in any society can do something that does not in fact reflect the whole society," said Zimpher. "I know tons of students at SUNY who really, really know how to be leaders and how to represent SUNY and that's who I'm really proud of."
