BERKSHIRE COUNTY, N.Y. -- Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick kicked off construction on a fiber optic broadband internet expansion project.
The Governor joined state, federal and local leaders in Sandisfield, one of 120 towns in Western and Central Massachusetts with little to no broadband internet access. The project calls for the installation of more than 1,000 miles of fiber optic cable, which will be attached to existing utility poles.
Governor Patrick says broadband access will be an economic boom for towns currently without reliable internet service.
"It is about our generational responsibility. What it is we do in our time to leave a better and stronger commonwealth for those who come behind us," Patrick said.
The state received more than $80 million in grants from the federal government to fund the project. Construction begins this summer and will continue through the next two years.
