SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- A dog attack leaves a woman disfigured with injuries to her face, ears, and arms.
Police said it happened on the 300 block of Hulett Street in Schenectady around 3:30 a.m. Monday.
Residents said they awoke to the woman's screams and witnessed three pit bulls attacking her.
Police said the dogs had escaped from the house across the street through an unlocked gate.
The dogs mauled the 58-year-old woman who, according to police, was walking down the street when the attack happened.
By the time police arrived, neighbors said she was still conscious but bleeding profusely. Police had to subdue at least one of the dogs with a Taser. The dogs' owner, Jasmine Tirado, 21, secured the others.
The pit bulls were seized and are being held at the Animal Protective Foundation in Scotia. Officials there said pit bull attacks like this one are rare and not representative of the breed.
Emilia Falcon said, "I heard the lady say, 'help me, help me.' But I thought she was saying get the door off of me. But what she was really trying to say because the dogs were so viciously attacking her, what she was really trying to say is, 'help me, get these dogs off of me."
Barbara Spillane of the Animal Protective Foundation said, "Generally these dogs are very friendly dogs. They have a lot of energy. They're very active. They're very dedicated. They're very devoted dogs. I think it's unfortunate when we hear situations like this because it does make it seem as though pit bulls in general are bad."
Police said no criminal charges will be filed against Tirado since the animals were not intentionally let out. Two of the dogs have already been put down. The third will be euthanized as well.
Police said the victim is recovering at Albany Medical Center and is expected to live.
