UNITED STATES -- A State of Emergency has now been declared in New York as officials keep an eye on Hurricane Irene's approach.

Irene has pounded the Bahamas with high winds and torrential downpours. There are reports of trees down, power lines and power outages.

Evacuations are already underway in parts of North Carolina.

Irene could hit the northeast hard between Saturday night and Sunday night.

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie is already asking some folks to play it safe and head away from the coast.

"I'm asking folks on the Barrier Islands, in Cape May, Atlantic Ocean, to leave now. And I'm leading by example. I'm on a Barrier Island right now with my wife and four kids. We won't be there tonight. So, you know, I'm not asking anybody else to do anything that I'm not doing. There are people upset that are cutting short their vacation, I feel their pain. But you know what, we have to do what we have to do," Christie said.
