NMARGARETVILLE, N.Y. -- The water level in Margaretville rose so high Sunday, the mayor says it seemed as if this wooden bear was trying to keep its head above the water. Now, that's what many in his village are trying to do.
"Gone. They're gone. Their homes are gone. These people can't be staying in these shelters for the rest of their lives. Let's get a plan started now," said Mayor William Stanton.
To ensure the recovery process moves as quickly as possible, Governor Cuomo creates a storm response task force. The Commissioner of the Office of General Services is responsible for Delaware and Ulster counties. Thursday, she meets with the Margaretville mayor and other Delaware County officials. The visit comes, just one day after her boss was in town looking at damage.
"The Governor has stated and he believes that this storm will probably be upwards to one billion or more," said Roann Destito, the Commissioner of the Office of General Services.
A thick coat of dust, fills the air as we drive through Arkville and Fleischmanns. The storm claimed the life of an 82-year-old woman, ripped homes off their foundation, wiped out bridges and took an entire fire department's truck supply off the road.
"We've got to beat that drum. We've got to let the people know in this whole state that we exist and that we've got tremendous problems," said Jim Eisel, the Chairman of the Board in Delaware County.
Commissioner Destito said she's aware these areas need help with debris management, stream cleanup and getting small businesses back on their feet. The roof of the only supermarket for nearly 25 miles caved in and inside, the flood waters wrecked freezers and shelves. Food is being flown in to Margaretville.
"The one thing Governor Cuomo is very interested in is getting back the commerce to these villages," said Destito.
Some of the Governor's staff is stationed at Belleayre Mountain. FEMA is also on site. People affected by the storms, can now apply for federal assistance.
