Dinosaur Bar-B-Que expected to stay open, this time around

By: C.J. Spang

After having to shut down for a couple of days after Tropical Storm Irene, Troy's Dinosaur Bar-B-Que once again finds itself under the threat of flooding. But as C.J. Spang reports, they're prepared to keep the doors open this time.

TROY, N.Y. -- Even with the possibility of the Hudson River flooding - again - Dinosaur Bar-B-Que is open for business, and they plan to keep it that way.

Director of Operations Michael Varipapa said, "In a light-hearted note, it's not something that you want to be good at. But we feel that we're a little more experienced today and a little bit more prepared."

Less than two weeks ago, Tropical Storm Irene caused the Hudson to flood the popular Troy restaurant, closing it for five days until it re-opened Saturday.

"It was definitely a tall order," said Varipapa. "But our staff was here around the clock. Anywhere from 30 to 40 employees all day."

Vic Christopher, Troy's Economic Development Coordinator, said, "The business owners, especially those in the entertainment district, located along the waterfront, have definitely learned a lot from this experience."

While it's bad news for Troy as the Hudson is threatening to overflow its banks again, the good news is the water isn't expected to go as high, and businesses like Dinosaur are much more prepared this time around.

Varipapa said, "I think the mindset now is to operate a more on worst case scenario than best scenario, to be prepared so when you hear one to three feet, you plan for four feet. Instead of when you hear two to four, we were hoping for two."

Dinosaur employees say as long as the high water doesn't seriously exceed the predictions, their preparations should keep the restaurant open for business.
