ROTTERDAM JUNCTION, N.Y. -- Following a mandatory evacuation Wednesday night, residents in the town of Rotterdam Junction return home while they wait to learn the fate of the Route 130 bridge.
The town had basically shut down.
Officials weren't sure how high the Mohawk River would rise overnight and with Lock 9 and the bridge spanning Route 130 closed, they didn't want anyone getting stuck. The bridge is still closed, however, officials say Route 5S is safe to drive on. Only the road between Leggerio Lane and Rynex Corners Road remains closed.
It's news that's left many feeling optimistic.
All day, crowds of people have watched engineers monitor the bridge. A 30 to 40 foot gap is visible between the river bank and the bridge's north side.
