BROOME, N.Y. -- A Broome man is dead after a shootout with police.

Schoharie County 911 received a call for a domestic dispute with shots fired at 554 State Route 145 in the Town of Broome.

State troopers and Schoharie County sheriff's deputies responded to the area where they found resident Richard Welden, 27, armed with a shotgun following a dispute with a neighbor.

According to State Police, Welden was ordered several times to drop the weapon, but he refused and fired at officers, who returned fire. Welden was pronounced dead at the scene.

An autopsy is scheduled for Monday at Albany Medical Center.
