ROTTERDAM, N.Y. -- A Rotterdam woman faces animal abuse charges after dozens of cats and a dog are taken from her home.

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty says Michelle Regels had 34 cats living with her. She has been charged with a misdemeanor of one count of animal abuse and could face up to one year in jail.

Regels says she had begun her own rescue website to take in strays, but people began leaving cats in carriers on her doorstep without her consent. Neighbors made calls about the cat situation there and the SPCA stepped in to help.

"Unfortunately, it does get out of control. I'm very happy that this happened because I want to get these guys taken care of the way they should be," Regels said.

The dog and most of the cats are now at shelters.
