RENSSELAER COUNTY, N.Y. -- The Veggie Mobile has been a staple in the Capital Region for more than four years, and now it's expanding.
Capital District Community Gardens is introducing the Veggie Mobile Sprout, which is the organization's second mobile market. With the addition of the Sprout, they will be able to serve new locations and smaller neighborhoods.
The executive director says it is designed to bring affordable produce to people that wouldn't otherwise have access to fresh fruits and vegetables.
"There are not full service grocery stores nearby. They are low income people and they don't have easy transportation. Either they don't have a car or they can't access the public transportation system. So, to be able to bring fresh produce to people and provide it at a whole sale cost…that really makes a difference in being able to add fresh produce to someone's diet," said Amy Klein, Executive Director of Capital District Community Gardens.
The Veggie Mobile program serves more than 23 different locations throughout the Capital Region.
