ALBANY, N.Y. -- PEF members have until Nov. 4 to ratify a revised contract or face massive state worker layoffs.

Now one group is urging PEF members to vote "no" on the new contract.

PEF Proud vocally rejected the terms of the first contract, and now the group is hoping members will join them in voting no, a second time.

Despite PEF Proud's disapproval, union leaders are pushing their members to support the revised deal.

PEF President Ken Brynien said he hopes people understand the details of the contract before they make up their minds.

"We're faced with a particular economic situation," Brynien said, "We're faced with a whole in the budget, and the governor has said we'll need to get it from the unions through negotiations or we'll have to lay people off. So we negotiated the best deal we could get, and now it's time to bite the bullet and say, this is okay for now. We'll save our 3,496 members, and then we'll go back, and then we'll deal with the governor, the Legislature on the next budget."

The 3,500 state worker layoffs will be carried out if members fail to approve the revised contract agreement.
