COLONIE, N.Y. -- The race for Colonie Town Supervisor was a close one from the get go. And while Incumbent Paula Mahan declared victory, her Republican opponent Denise Sheehan has not conceded.

Mahan said, "All I can say is I'm just so happy the people of Colonie saw through the misinfo out there."

Sheehan said, "This is a very close race. I am committed to making sure every vote is counted."

With all 61 precincts reporting, Mahan leads Sheehan by a little less than 300 votes. But GOP officials say about 1,000 absentee ballots still need to be counted.

Sheehan said, "My stepson is one of those absentees and he's fighting in Afghanistan."

This race was certainly a contentious one. In public appearances and campaign ads, Sheehan criticized Mahan for making a 25 year $100 million deal to privatize the town’s landfill. Mahan says all the attacks were false and misleading.

Mahan said, "It was tough to sit back and watch what was going on. It was real tough."

Mahan says she's eliminated the town’s $21 million deficit and is proud of the proposed budget for 2012. Only time will tell if a historically red community chooses Mahan for a third term.

Mahan said, "As we go through the next term, people will see its ok and we are going in a positive direction. We have made tremendous progress in the last four years and will continue for the next four years."

And while another election day is in the books, the race for Colonie Town Supervisor isn't over just yet. Well have to see what happens once the absentee ballots are counted.
