Syracuse University graduate and retired professional wrestler Dick Beyer – otherwise known as The Destroyer – says he still can’t believe the news about his good friend, Bernie Fine.
"I would, never, if someone had. Well, when they said, I said no, that's not true, that's a lie."
Fine, who was an assistant boys basketball coach at Syracuse since 1976, was fired Sunday following accusations he sexually molesting three boys over the course of his career.
Beyer says he's known Fine for decades, and he's always known him to be a respectable, honorable and popular person.
"I was shocked when I found out about this."
Beyer says his friendship with Fine began when Beyer began working for Syracuse as an assistant football coach. The two were also Phi Kappa Alpha fraternity brothers.
"I... it's hard for me to believe he had this, and the more I've heard of it, my daughter came home and says ‘Dad, something is behind this,’” said Beyer.
Beyer says he just saw Fine last month at an awards banquet. He says it breaks his heart to see his alma mater and his friend, just one month later, receiving so much negative attention.
