ALBANY, N.Y. -- The Albany Common Council failed to override Mayor Jerry Jennings’ veto of the hydrofracking ban in Albany by one vote.
The council previously voted to ban hydrofracking in Albany, although Albany is not a source of natural gas reserves. Mayor Jennings later vetoed that ban, citing the ongoing study by the DEC to determine rules and regulations for the controversial natural gas extraction process.
The council needed a two-thirds supermajority, or 10 out of 15 votes, to override that veto. Only nine members voted in favor of the override.
Some members feel hydrofracking has the potential to contaminate Albany's water supply.
