ALBANY, N.Y. – There is some controversy surrounding the Capital Holiday Lights display in Washington Park.

According to the Times Union, the Park Conservancy group says it's time to turn the lights off. They say the 98 acre display is taking a toll on the park's landscaping and that it also creates unnecessary traffic jams in the city. They also say it's an eye sore during the day with wires draped through trees and metal poles.

The display features scenes of police cars, fire trucks, Santa Claus and other holiday staples that thousands of people come to visit each year.

"We have a Police Athletic League that is dependent upon the revenue from that and thousands look forward to that every year. Yes, there are going to be some people who take exception to it, but as far as I'm concerned, let’s balance it and do it right. It is our park. It is everyone's park. Let’s have it for activity. Let’s utilize it for a good cause," Mayor Jerry Jennings said.

Jennings also said the event has lasted a lot longer than they anticipated and because it is successful, it is not going to stop.
