ALBANY, N.Y. – All of the holiday light displays that were vandalized this weekend in Washington Park have been fixed.
The Albany Police Athletic League says thanks to the help of several electricians, 100 percent of the Hannaford Capital Holiday Lights are up and running again.
An estimated $30,000 worth of damage was done to several light displays sometime between Friday night and early Saturday morning. Corporate sponsorship signs within the display were sprayed with graffiti messages. Some electrical cords were also cut on many displays.
As for who's responsible, Albany Police say they hope the vandals may start bragging about what they did and they encourage anyone who hears information to contact them.
"That's our hope. The person tells somebody. Or somebody has some information and they'll come forward. Because the bottom line, again, it comes down to, this program benefits kids. So all you're doing is hurting kids. You’re not making any kind of impact or statement, if that's the case, if that was the intent, of hurting the police department. You're hurting kids,” said Albany Police Department Spokesperson James Miller.
The lights display is still open every night at 6 p.m. through January 2nd.
