Employees, residents stunned by sudden Friendly's closures

By: Innae Park

It's a not-so-friendly decision made by the Friendly Ice Cream Corporation as another five locations are suddenly shut down in the Capital Region. As our Innae Park finds, patrons weren't the only ones surprised to see the doors closed.

CAPITAL REGION, N.Y. -- For many in the Capital Region, their local Friendly's restaurant is a familiar place. However, Sunday's shut-down of a handful of shops is forcing them to unexpectedly go farther to fill their stomachs.

Friendly Ice Cream Corporation released a statement regarding the sudden closure, saying, "Since entering Chapter 11 in October 2011, the Company has sought to work with our landlords to restructure lease arrangements at locations where we believed rents did not reflect current market conditions and were significantly impacting the viability of underperforming restaurants."

However, they say they weren't successful at reaching an agreement for all their locations, which led to the closure of sites on Central Avenue in Albany, on Troy Schenectady and New Loudon Roads in Latham, on Saratoga Avenue in Glenville and at Colonie Center.

YNN spoke with a few employees who used to work at the Friendly's on Route 7 (Troy Schenectady Road) in Latham. They say they came into work Sunday and had no idea that by Monday, they would be out of work. Unfortunately, by the end of the day, they learned it would be their last shift there.

In response to the employees' futures, the company said, "We regret that this decision has become necessary and we appreciate the hard work and dedication of the Friendly’s employees and intend to accommodate as many as possible at nearby operating restaurants, where available."

There are still a handful of locations open in the area.
